Hair Fall TreatmentsManoj Kumar
It’s something that almost all of us are bound to come across in our lifetimes. For something that is predominantly made up of dead cells , we sure lose our minds and make a big fuss over losing it, from the top of our heads. Since increased hair fall is a symptom, it would be in the best interest of a concerned individual to head on down straight to a qualified dermatologist for a consult. Apart from medications, certain procedures may be advised to arrest hair fall and rejuvenate hair growth, in patients deemed appropriate by a dermatologist.
Mesotherapy – This form of hair rejuvenation therapy advocates the use of a cocktail of active ingredients such as hair follicle stem cell activators , dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blockers, circulation enhancers, peptides, vitamins, and minerals, carefully formulated to enhance hair follicle stem cell activity and vastly improve microcirculation around the hair follicles. This cocktail of growth enhancers can either be injected into the scalp or used along with a derma roller.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – A relatively newer form of treatment for hair fall disorders. Here, the patients own blood is extracted and centrifuged so as to concentrate the platelet fraction, which is then re injected into the scalp. The concentrated platelets release various growth factors that stimulate the hair follicle stem cells and revitalise hair growth.
Hair transplant – In this procedure, hair is transplanted from one region of the body (most commonly, the back of the head) to the bald areas of the scalp. It is considered to be the final form of treatment for bald areas in appropriately diagnosed cases. There are 2 different methods of harvesting hair from the donor area-Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) where each follicular unit is individually taken directly from the scalp with handheld instruments known as punches, and Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) involves removing a thin strip of tissue from the back of the head, from which the donor hair follicles are extracted for subsequent transplant. Hair transplant procedures are done under local anaesthesia. A Dermatologist would be the best person to decide which type of hair transplant would be more suitable in a given patient, since each type has its pros and cons.
