Vitiligo is a skin condition affecting the pigment producing cells (melanocytes) of the skin resulting in white patches. It may affect skin on any part of the body including hair or mucosal surfaces like the lips and mouth. It is not a life threatening condition or a contagious disease. It is usually stressful only due to the cosmetic impairment it causes.
Treatment for Vitiligo includes measures to stop the progression of the loss of pigmentation using medications in the form of tablets or creams. This can be combined with other modalities of treatment which help in regaining the lost pigment with the help of light based phototherapy or Lasers. It requires multiple sessions of treatments where there is gradual improvement in pigmentation. Certain areas which are resistant to treatment like the lips, tips of hands and feet, surgical treatments can be planned which includes skin grafting and culture methods which can treat larger areas. Cosmetic camouflage can also be done using micro-pigmentation techniques which utilizes inert pigments to mask the patch of affected skin.
